About Fredrika

FREDRIKA
The name Fredrika originates from the writer Fredrika Runeberg, who was also born in Jakobstad (1807).

Interlibrary co-operation
The library co-operation between the first Fredrika libraries started in 1990. This was a result of a common need by minor bilingual public libraries to convert the local card catalogue into local databases. The internal database Fredrika was started in 1993. Machine readable bibliografic entries are bought to the database Fredrika, from where they are distributed to local databases.

The Internal Database
The common internal database has many functions for the libraries - bibliografic entries, inter library loans between the municipal libraries, and, above all a channel for co-operation between minor libraries with few librarians, over municipality borders.
Fredrika functions as a real network, consisting of equal member libraries with no central library.

The InternetFredrika
The InternetFredrika can be found on www.fredrika.net, It has been online since 15.12.1995. and was the first free public library catalogue on Internet in Finland
At present there are about 1090000 books (390 000 titles) in the union catalogue of Fredrika. The catalogue is still growing according to the time the libraries can use for registering older books.

Altogether, the Fredrika libraries have about 1,000,000 books in their collections. There are also books in foreign languages (English, German, French, etc.).
